ISSP [2018] : Designing a Sustainable Classroom Building in Chiang Rai, Thailand

The rural Wawee community in Chiang Rai does not receive enough financial support from the government to provide quality classrooms for its students. This negatively impacts students as poor physical infrastructure has been shown to influence student academic performance (Young et al., 2003). The Sati Foundation wants to address this by providing the community with sustainable buildings using local resources to reduce construction and maintenance costs. We interviewed the community, researched sustainable designs, consulted experts, and created an electronic design model which addressed the community’s needs. We recommend that a sustainable classroom building be built and a construction manual be used by the Sati Foundation and Wawee community, to serve as a model for similar communities.
